When itchy skin needs veterinary attention
Itching is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Parasites, allergy, infection, hormonal disease and pain can all present as an itchy, uncomfortable animal, and they require different treatment.

Red flags for a same-week appointment
These signs suggest the problem has moved beyond home management.
- Broken skin, weeping, crusting or a noticeable odour.
- Hair loss in patches, or symmetrical thinning.
- Sudden facial swelling, hives or breathing changes - treat as urgent.
- Itching that disrupts sleep, or persists beyond two weeks.
Useful information to bring
Photographs over time, a note of when the itching started, seasonality, diet history, current parasite treatments and any washes used will make the consultation far more productive.
Why parasite control is checked first
Flea allergy remains a leading cause of itching. A vet will usually confirm that parasite cover is complete and current across the household before investigating allergy or infection.
